Whole-Home Water Filtration

Why You Should Consider a Water Filter

We have our own set of unique water quality issues here in the Tampa Bay area. In particular, we have 3 big water problems to deal with:

  • Saltwater
  • Contaminants
  • Humidity and Corrosion

Saltwater

Saltwater in your home water supply isn’t dangerous. It just tastes lousy.

  • Being close to the coast, there’s always a risk of saltwater getting into our freshwater sources.
  • A good water filter system is key to keeping unwanted salt out of your drinking water.

Contaminants

We’ve got some particularly nasty contimants you should be aware of. Some of the more common water contaminants in Tampa:

  • Arsenic (common in wells): Linked to skin lesions, cancer (especially skin, bladder, and lung cancer), cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes.
  • Chlorine: Inhaling chlorine vapors, especially in enclosed spaces like showers, can aggravate respiratory problems like asthma or chronic bronchitis.
  • Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that cases diarrhea.
  • Fluoride: Long-term exposure to fluoride damages your joints, bones, thyroid function and can impede neurological development in children.
  • Benzene: Long-term exposure is linked to cancer, blood disorders, developmental issues in children, dizziness, headaches.
  • Copper can cause gastro-intestinal distress, liver and kidney damage, headaches, and dizziness.
  • Zinc is linked to stomach cramps and nausea. It also interferes with your ability to absorb essential nutrients, and that can lead to issues with your immune system.
  • Cadmium exposure is related cancer, kidney damage, bone de-mineralization reproductive and developmental issues.
  • Mercury is a neurotoxin that causes kidney damage, immune system damage, cardiovascular problems.

To be sure, our local water treatment centers do their best to keep all the bad stuff out of our water supplies. Nevertheless, if have any of these contaminants in your water, then you need a quality water filter system now, not later.

Humidity and Corrosion

Our humid climate hastens corrosion in pipes and systems. Corroding pipes cost you money*. Worse though, that corrosion leaches more contaminants into your
home’s water system.

You definitely want to keep your drinking water free of corrosion-based contaminants.

(*The right plumbing materials combined with regular maintenance will reduce corrosion and help keep the bad stuff out of your water.)

What Signs Should I Look For?

To figure out if your home needs a water filter, just use your senses of Sight, Smell, Taste and Touch.

How Does a Whole House Filter Work?

A whole-house water filter treats all the water entering your home. It is typically installed at the main water line, so every tap gets filtered water. A quality system usually has several stages.

The first stage is a sediment filter to catch particles and additional filters – like activated carbon – to remove chemicals and impurities.

Some systems might also have specialized filters for specific contaminants like lead or bacteria.

The sediment stage catches and holds onto the larger particles like dirt, sand, and rust. It usually involves a pre-filter, a kind of mesh or spun fiber barrier, that traps these bigger bits before they can get into your home’s plumbing. This stage helps protect the finer filters down the line from getting clogged up too quickly, making sure they can do their job better and last longer.

After the Sediment stage, the water hits the next levels of defense. These stages
typically involve different types of filters to remove different sorts of problems
from your water. These can include:

Activated Carbon Filter

This acts like a sponge for chemical contaminants such as chlorine, pesticides, and industrial solvents.

Ion Exchange

This stage swaps hard minerals like calcium and magnesium, which cause scale buildup, with softer ones like sodium or potassium to softening you water.

Reverse Osmosis (RO)

This high-tech filter pushes your water through a super fine membrane to catch even tinier contaminants like lead, arsenic, and some bacteria. It’s like an ultra-fine sieve.

UV Filters

These use ultraviolet light to zap living organisms like bacteria and viruses, making sure your water’s safe from microbiological threats.

Each stage targets different contaminants, ensuring your water is not just clean but also healthy and tasty by the time it reaches your tap.

What to Expect from a Home Water Filter System

With a home water filter system from Jones and Sons, you can expect these benefits:

• Your water will be objectively cleaner and subjectively better tasting. Everything you cook with your water will taste better as well.
• Your laundry, your dishes, your body –  and anything else you wash – will both look brighter and feel cleaner.
• And most importantly, your water will be safer. Better water quality means a healthier you.

Just like a car needs regular maintenance – like oil changes, filters need regular check-ups and changes. Filters need space as well. Our experts can help you find a good location.

NOTE: Sometimes – not always – filters can reduce your water pressure. This is normal.
